"NEW TO" PILATES GUIDE

WHAT IS PILATES?

Originally developed by Joe Pilates in the early 1900s, the Pilates Method of Body Conditioning was a rehabilitation technique used to help injured soldiers during WWI. Pilates is a strengthening technique which needs a certain level of body awareness. Remember it is important to feel the body move and allow yourself to experience that movement.

HOW DO I START?
Due to the structure and strict form as well as to ensure a safe and effective Pilates Regimen, we recommend everyone to start with our Introductory 4 Private Lessons package. Upon completion, your ProPilates Instructor will evaluate your skills and suggest a class regimen for your current ability level. Make sure you let the ProPilates Instructors know of any injuries you have ever had. Safety is our main priority.

I JUST FOUND OUT I AM PREGNANT, CAN I TAKE PILATES?
During pregnancy Pilates can be a counter-indicated unless you started with Pilates before you got pregnant. If that is the case, you can continue with your Pilates Regimen for the duration of the pregnancy. The benefits are aquicker recovery, overall strength, fewer back aches and less water retention as well as healthier weight gain. If you are planning on starting Pilates once your pregnancy has begun, our suggestion is to wait and visit us after your doctor’s clearance.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF PILATES?
Pilates will help you become stronger and more flexible as well as help your posture and body alignment. By strengthening your body you will also experience mental strength and overall change of your sleeping and mood patterns. By educating the body to move as a unit, age related injuries are not an issue and a noticeable quality of life change will occur.

HOW DO I PREPARE FOR CLASS?
  • Please arrive 10-15 minutes early to check in at the front desk. We want to make sure we serve you well.

  • Dress appropriately. We recommend organic cotton to optimize movement and cooling of the body.

  • Remove your shoes upon entering the studio. Always wear socks due to sanitary regulation within the state of Florida. We like our environment clean and friendly
and have foot covering available if you forget socks.

  • Don’t use perfumes or colognes.

  • Practice on empty stomach. Eat 2-3 hours before your Pilates session to optimize results and not feel sick. If you need energy food, juice or fruit is fine.

  • Pilates brings awareness to the body, which is a long process. Be consistent and patient in your development. Be compassionate to yourself.

  • Turn off your cell phone and allow yourself to unwind your senses.

  • Please let us know about all of the injuries you have ever had so we can ensure proper safety and instruct you with the correct exercises.

  • Practice often, 3-4 times a week to see optimal results. Joe Pilates once said, “In 10 lessons you will feel better, in 20 lessons you will look better and in 30 lessons you will have a completely new body.”

  • Take a private lesson to improve your technique.

  • And last but not least, pamper yourself with a relaxing therapeutic massage to balance the body and the mind. Treat yourself to a mini vacation…enjoy!
